THEN:

Kerry was born 4th March 1941 in Perth Western Australia and was raised with her parents and 2 sisters in the rural country town until 12 years old when her family moved to live in the city of Perth where she attended a private Catholic girls school.

Kerry was a very shy, self conscious, and sensitive teenager eager to please but wished she could  be bold, courageous, and a heroine. She was a great reader, spending all the time she could in books where she could imagine she was the heroine. Being so sensitive it was difficult for her to enjoy life. She was given many opportunities in life but she felt like a square peg in a round hole and in between trying to fit in and have fun she was beaten back by fear of rejection and feeling different.

At18 years of age, Kerry’s life was about to change dramatically when she picked up her first drink of alcohol.

NOW:

After 12 years of chronic drinking resulting initially in having fun, then fun and trouble, then just trouble, bewilderment, frustration fear and despair, broken promises and broken dreams, I was  directed to the rooms of alcohlics Anonymous where I found love, acceptance and understanding and have not had a drink of alcohol since. In exchange for the bottle I was given the keys to the Kingdom and a life beyond my wildest dreams.

Through the 12 Steps of recovery, the AA fellowship and reaching out the hand of friendship to those still suffering keeps me sober so I can continue my spiritual journey of sobriety. My life has been full of blessings and amazing spiritual experiences, compliments of a loving God and my hearts desire to share with others what has been so freely given to me. The joy of giving without wanting or expecting a return is a joy beyond description and one of the many principles of our 12 steps.

AA is a spiritual way of life, not religious. It was started by a Stock Broker and a Doctor in 1935 who found by sharing their problems with alcohol and how they felt could stay sober and help others achieve soberity, another principle of AA, love and service. I continue to go to meetings to remember where I came from and to carry the message of recovery to others that they to may find a safe haven and live.
